Skiing can be grouped into Three general categories; Nordic, Alpine and Freestyle.

Alpine Skiing
Alpine skiing includes sports that evolved from skiing as was done in the Alps. Alpine bindings attach at both the toe and the heel of the skier's boots. Types of Alpine skiing include:

  • Alpine skiing (Downhill Skiing)
  • Extreme skiing
  • Free Skiing
  • Freestyle skiing
  • Glade Skiing
  • Heliskiing
  • Mono Skiing
  • Newschool skiing
  • Randonée (Alpine Touring)
  • Speed Skiing
  • Snow Kiting
  • Ski Mountaineering
  • Skwal

Alpine Events Include:

  • Slalom
  • Giant Slalom Slalom
  • Super Giant Slalom
  • Downhill
  • Alpine Skiing Combined
  • Speed Skiing

Nordic Skiing

Nordic skiing, the oldest, includes sports that evolved from skiing as was done in Scandinavia. Nordic style bindings attach at the toes of the skier's boots, but not at the heels. Types of Nordic skiing include:

  • Back Country Skiing
  • Biathlon
  • Cross Country Skiing
  • Disabled Nordic Skiing
  • Nordic Combined
  • Skijoring
  • Ski Jumping (Ski Flying)
  • Ski Touring
  • Telemark Skiing

  • Cross Country Skiing

Freestyle Freestyle:
This kind of skiing could be called acrobatics on skis. Developed in the 1970s into a style called Hotdogging. Later called Jib skiing or Freestyle skiing. Skiers use jumps called kickers, or rails to do urban style aerial tricks.
