Right to Credit Report

Your Right to Your Credit Report

Obtaining a Free Credit Check in Canada

Residents of Canada are entitled to a free copy of their Consumer Disclosure Report via Canada Post once each year.

It is entirely your responsibility to ensure your credit reports are accurate, up to date and error free. Until the law changes to make it illegal to give false information on credit reports and make it the duty of credit reporting agencies to update their information accurately, the onus is on the consumer to validate their information and keep it current.

Your credit rating dictates how you live; what kind of home you live in, what kind of car you drive, how you spend your vacation time. Every day identity theft, credit fraud, and simple mistakes could effect or destroy your credit rating.

The two credit check agencies in Canada are Equifax Canada Inc. and TransUnion.

It is important to obtain a credit report from each agency since they can be drastically different. To receive a copy of your Consumer Disclosure report the agencies require the following information:

  • Your full name
  • Present address
  • Previous address, if present address is less than 2 years
  • Phone number (optional)
  • Date of Birth
  • Place of employment (optional)
  • Social Insurance Number (optional)
  • Your signature
