Canadian Generating Stations Contributing to Green House Gas Emissions

11 0f the top 30 contributors to green house gas emissions in Canada are Electric Generating Stations. Electric Generating Stations account for over 30% of all sources of pollution in Canada .

Nanticoke Power Station

The Nanticoke coal-fuelled generating station is located on the north shore of Lake Erie in Haldimand County, Ontario. Its eight generating units are capable of producing 3,920 megawatts (MW) of power. The station's annual production is in the range of 20 to 24 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh), enough electricity to run nearly 2.5 million households for a full year.

Boundary Dam Power Station. A coal-fired station located near Estevan Saskatchewan, six units with a combined generating capacity of 813 net MW. The CO2 Extraction Plant was built to remove 4 tonnes of CO2 per day from the coal fired facility. A long term project to install electrostatic precipitators on all units — to reduce air particulate emissions — was completed in July 2003

Boundary Dam Power Station

Sundance Generating Facility. The Sundance power plant is the largest coal-fired electrical generating facility in western Canada. The plant is located 70 kilometres west of Edmonton, and has six generating units (one ‘unit’ consists of a boiler, turbine and generator). The plant's six units combined burn about 1,040 tonnes of coal per hour – the equivalent of 250 train cars per day.

Lingan Generating Station, in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia burns both coal and oil to produce electricity. Many complaints of in-efficiency and oil spills.

Poplar River Power Station, a coal-fired generating station located near Coronach in south-central Saskatchewan. In 2006, replaced worn-out boiler components with components of newer and improved design. Upgrade the existing turbine to improve efficiency, and will be replacing the generator to increase the unit's output from 281 to 315 megawatts (MW) through increased reliability and efficiency.

Sheerness Generating Station

Sheerness Generating Station, a coal-fired generating station located about 160 kilometres northeast of Calgary near Hanna. Rated as top coal-fired unit in Canada in 1992 and 1996. The cooling pond is also a source of water for the nearby town of Hanna, irrigation water for farmers along the route, and is also a valued recreation area for residents.

Lambton Generating Station a coal-fueled generating station located on the St. Clair River, 26 km south of Sarnia, Ontario. Its four generating units are capable of producing 1,972 megawatts (MW) of power. The station's annual production is in the range of 11 billion kilowatt-hours, more than three times the amount of electricity used annually by homes, schools, hospitals and businesses in London.

Trenton Generating Station, Trenton, Nova Scotia a coal powered plant fed by Pictou County coal as well as coal from Sydney, Nova Scotia. Many complaints of front yards covered in black fly ash, health problems, paint is stripped off our cars, and worries about drinking water. Nova Scotia Power to spend $45 million improving its Trenton generating plant, 2006. "The proposed emission controls will reduce the particulate emissions from the Trenton generating station, The Trenton investment shows a commitment to improving air quality in Nova Scotia.

Battle River Generating Station

Battle River Generating Station, a coal-fueled generating station located about 360 kilometres northeast of Calgary on the banks of the Battle River. Water for the Battle River Generating Station is supplied by a reservoir created in 1954 by a 12-metre high dam located on the Battle River.

Genesee Thermal Generating Station, Warburg, Alberta. consists of two coal-fired. thermal electric generating units, 400-megawatt generating unit opened in late 1993, has the capacity to produce enough low-cost electricity to serve a city of 500,000 people.

Genesee Coal Mine Coal-fired generating plants are likely to continue operating for decades. A multi-faceted approach is definitely needed with the use of lower sulphur coal, clean-coal technologies, natural gas and more renewables. The Genesee Coal Mine, located approximately 70 kilometres southwest of Edmonton, provides 5.5 million tonnes of coal a year for this Genesee Generating Station.
